CDA is building world’s largest Urban Miyawaki Forest in Islamabad

In collaboration with a private company, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has constructed the largest Urban Miyawaki Forest in the world.

The CDA Chairman, Captain (retired) Muhammad Usman Younus, and the MD of Mari Petroleum, Faheem Haider, planted seedlings in the H-12 Sector of Islamabad to inaugurate the forest. Additional CDA officials were present during the event.

The forest has an area of 6.8 hectares (740,520 square feet). The first 20,000 large-sized seedlings of various species have already been planted, and the planting will continue, progressively expanding the forest. To safeguard the plantation, a unique defensive barrier has been constructed.

During his remarks, the CDA Chairman extended his appreciation to Mari Petroleum for participating in the project. He said that 20,000 new plants would contribute to Islamabad’s status as a green city and that the CDA intends to conduct other planting programmes in collaboration with other ministries.

As the largest Miyawaki forest, the CDA administration has made extraordinary provisions to ensure its safety, according to him. In 2021, former prime minister Imran Khan launched formerly the urban Miyawaki forest, which covered 12.5 acres in Lahore.

Akira Miyawaki, a Japanese botanist, and specialist in plant ecology was the originator of the Miyawaki Forest tree-planting method.

This strategy involves planting trees in close proximity to one another; during the early stages, the plants battle for space, light, and water, resulting in fast growth.
